Constitution

As approved by the General Assembly on January 14 2009.

Article I: Name of the Association

The name of this Association shall be the Honors Student Association (HSA) at Western Michigan University.

Article II: Purpose of Association

In order to support the mission of the Lee Honors College, the Honors Student Association will provide social, academic, and cultural events that will enhance a student's experience in the honors community at Western Michigan University.

Article III: Membership of Association

Membership is open to all Western Michigan University Students who qualify for, and are accepted into, the Lee Honors College. No student is denied membership because of race, gender, religion, height, weight, age, disability, nationality, sexual orientation, or veteran status.

Article IV: Officers

Elected officers of the Association shall be the President, Vice-President, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, and Treasurer. The manner of selection, term of office, duties, etc. shall be set forth in the By-Laws of this Association.

Article V: Executive Board

The Executive Board shall be comprised of the elected officers of the Association and additional board members as established in the bylaws. The duties, structure, and function of the Executive Board shall be set forth in the By-Laws of this Association.

Article VI: Statement of Compliance

The organization will comply with all SA&LP and University policies, procedures, and practices and all local, state, and federal laws.

Article VII: Meetings

Section 1: Executive Board

The Executive Board shall meet at least once each month. Other meetings may be called by the President, or must be called by the President upon request of a majority of Executive Board members.

Section 2: General Assembly

There shall be at least one general assembly meeting held each month during the academic year. Other meetings hall be called during the year by the President as necessary, or must be called by the President upon receipt of a petition signed by one-fifth (1/5) of the membership.

Article VIII: Quorum

Section 1: Executive Board

A quorum shall be a simple majority of the total Board.

Section 2: General Assembly

A quorum shall be a simple majority of the members present.

Article IX: Amending the Constitution

The Dean of the Lee Honors College, the Advisor, or the Executive Board may propose amendments to the Constitution. Prior notice of at least one week must be given to the general membership in writing before an amendment to the Constitution can be voted upon by the membership. To be adopted, amendments to the Constitution must be approved by a simple majority of the members.

Article X: Ratification of the Constitution

This Constitution shall take effect upon ratification by a simple majority of the membership voting. The Executive Board shall determine the method of obtaining ratification.
